Innovative Component Reinforcement using Composite Profiles: Focus on the DRIFT Project

When research turns into real innovation: DRIFT shows how modern composite materials such as continuous fibre-reinforced thermoplastic rods (GFRP and CFRP) can sustainably expand the potential of conventional plastic components.

From 2020 to 2023, the DRIFT research project (load-dependent reinforcement of injection-moulded components using composite profiles) developed new, efficient processes for optimising plastic components at the highest stress points using fibre-reinforced round rods. The aim was to save material through targeted reinforcement while increasing component strength and service life.

Close cooperation between consortium leader Brose Fahrzeugteile SE & Co. KG, research partner Fraunhofer IGCV and industry partners Autenrieth Kunststofftechnik GmbH & Co. KG, Kube GmbH Ingenieurbüro, Porsche AG and WAFIOS AG has resulted in an innovative combination process involving injection moulding and composite technology. This process enables the resource-efficient production of heavy-duty plastic components with reduced weight and improved performance.

The holistic approach of the DRIFT project not only offers technical innovations, but also opens up economic advantages for industries such as automotive, mechanical engineering and other industrial applications that rely on lightweight construction and high load-bearing capacity.
