One Special Insight – Kube GmbH visits the Mercedes AMG Factory

Last Tuesday, our team had the exclusive opportunity to visit the Mercedes-AMG factory in Affalterbach and gain detailed insight into the production of high-performance engines.

The tour began in the showroom of the AMG site, where the company’s history was explained to us, from its beginnings through key milestones to its current position as a high-performance brand. In the entrance area, an engine on display was particularly eye-catching, exemplifying AMG’s technical performance and expertise. The exhibition is complemented by trophies, engines, vehicle parts and a changing selection of special vehicles, including older models and versions no longer in production. Overall, the room provides a vivid overview of the development and diversity of Mercedes-AMG.

The tour then continued to the production facility. A documentation wall provides an overview of the development of the engines – from the first designs to current concepts – and highlights key technical milestones. The continuity of personnel was particularly striking: some of today’s specialists were trained by the first engine builders at AMG and continue to work for the company.

A central part of the tour was devoted to the production of eight-cylinder engines. Each engine is assembled by a single specialist according to the “one man, one engine” principle. Four variants are manufactured using a structured production process in which each station provides the necessary components and tools. The quality of each engine is continuously checked. Assembly takes up to four hours. Once completed, a plaque bearing the name of the responsible assembler is affixed to the engine.

The four-cylinder engines are manufactured according to a similar principle, but the process is more automated, reducing assembly time to around three hours. Here, too, each engine is marked with a sticker identifying the mechanic responsible for its assembly.

In the production hall for twelve-cylinder engines, a single employee is responsible for assembling each engine. This is where the design, manufacturing process, and special requirements of these engines are implemented.

Finally, the engine builder plaques representing all engine builders currently working at the plant are on display. Plaques from the exclusive Black Series models are also part of the exhibition, illustrating the historical development and precision craftsmanship at AMG.

Kube GmbH would like to thank Mercedes-AMG for the detailed tour and the interesting insights into engine production. It was a great opportunity for our team to learn exciting information about the company’s history and manufacturing processes, while also interacting with each other and promoting team spirit.
